TDFormer Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has sharply contrasted India’s technological progress with Nigeria’s political shortcomings.
Mr. Obi lamented that while India is advancing artificial intelligence (AI), Nigeria is entrenching election rigging mechanisms.
A Tale of Two Nations
Obi’s remarks came after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly praised citizens for their role in driving AI innovation.
Modi expressed confidence that outcomes from India’s AI Summit would shape a progressive, opportunity‑driven future.
In stark contrast, Obi criticized Nigeria’s political culture, saying:
“Yet in Nigeria, we wake up thinking about how to rig local government elections, how to exploit and impoverish the poor, and how to use the very children we should be nurturing for the future as tools for manipulation and election malpractice.”
He argued that Nigeria, despite its abundant talent and resources, continues to be defined by bad governance, greed, and selfishness, rather than service and vision.
Call for Leadership and Reform
Obi urged Nigerians to demand leadership imbued with compassion, commitment, and character.
He solicited for leadership that works for all citizens and transforms promise into progress.
He emphasized that Nigeria must move away from manipulation and embrace innovation to secure a brighter future.
Earlier, on February 16, Obi reinforced his stance on electoral integrity in a post titled “Our Votes Must Count”.
He insisted that in the 2027 elections, Nigerians must remain at polling units to witness the counting and transmission of results.
Obi warned that those who undermine the process would face the full weight of the law.
“If you do not count our votes, we will count you among those who destroy our democracy, thereby destroying our future, and you must answer to the law,” Obi declared.
Implications
Obi’s comparison underscores the widening gap between Nigeria and countries investing in technology to drive development.
His remarks are likely to intensify pressure on the National Assembly and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee transparent, real‑time electronic transmission of results.
Analysts say Obi’s message resonates strongly with citizens frustrated by electoral malpractice and yearning for leadership that prioritizes innovation, accountability, and service.
