THIS DAWN — Controversial Islamic scholar and public affairs commentator, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi, has welcomed the recent defection of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, from the party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Sheikh Gumi described the move as a positive step for Nigeria’s evolving democracy.
Gumi said the move reflects a growing political consciousness and a maturing democratic culture in the country.
Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, formally joined the ADC on December 31, 2025, during a rally in Enugu.

He called on opposition parties to unite under a national coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 elections.
His defection has sparked reactions across the political spectrum, with many viewing it as a strategic realignment ahead of a high-stakes electoral contest.
Gumi Hails Peter Obi
Gumi, known for his outspoken views on national issues, praised Obi’s decision and urged other politicians to heed the voice of the people.
“Nigerian democracy is maturing. Politicians should listen to the people’s cry and do the right thing.
“Time is fast approaching—no one can hold Nigerians to ransom,” he said.
His remarks reflect growing public frustration with entrenched political interests and a desire for more responsive leadership.
In a post on his Facebook page released shortly after Obi’s announcement, Gumi emphasized that the era of political impunity is fading.
He said that leaders must now align with the aspirations of ordinary Nigerians.
Obi’s move to ADC is seen as an attempt to build a broader coalition capable of challenging the dominance of APC and PDP.
Analysts suggest that his popularity, especially among youth and urban voters, could energize the opposition and reshape the political landscape.
As Nigeria heads toward 2027, Gumi’s endorsement of Obi’s defection adds moral weight to the call for unity and reform.
It signaled that religious and civic voices are increasingly aligned with democratic renewal.
