THIS DAWN — The Presidency has dismissed as false a viral social media claim alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has replaced his Chief of Staff, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, with the Principal Private Secretary, Hakeem Muri-Okunola.
The clarification follows widespread online speculation that triggered confusion about purported changes within the President’s inner circle.
The unverified claim, which first surfaced on social media platforms, alleged that Gbajabiamila had been removed from office and replaced by Muri-Okunola.
Some posts went further to cite unnamed “insider sources” as confirmation.
The narrative rapidly gained traction across Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and WhatsApp.
The rumor was subsequently amplified by blogs and several online platforms, intensifying public debate before any official confirmation.
Responding to the development, the Presidency issued a State House press release categorically denying the report.
Gbajabiamila remains Chief of Staff
The statement, signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, described the claim as a fabrication by “mischievous purveyors of fake news.”
According to the statement, no changes have been made to the President’s senior staff positions.
Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila remains the Chief of Staff to the President, Onanuga said emphatically.

Meanwhile, Hakeem Muri-Okunola continues to serve in his role as Principal Private Secretary.
The Presidency emphasized that there has been no replacement, reshuffle, or reassignment involving either official.
The press release also urged Nigerians and media organizations to exercise caution, verifying information before publishing or sharing content on social media platforms.
It warned that the rapid spread of unverified claims poses a significant challenge to public discourse and can undermine trust in government institutions.
By swiftly addressing the rumor, the Presidency said it aimed to reinforce stability and continuity within President Tinubu’s administration.
Growing misinformation
In the meantime, it reassured the public that official government communications remain the most reliable source of information.
The incident has again highlighted the growing problem of misinformation in the digital space.
It also highlighted the responsibility of media practitioners and social media users to uphold basic standards of fact-checking.
The Presidency reaffirmed its commitment to transparent communication.
It called on the public to remain vigilant against false narratives designed to mislead and cause unnecessary speculation.
