THIS DAWN — The Federal Government has announced the full reopening of all 47 Federal Unity Colleges across the country, marking the restoration of normal academic activities following recent security-related disruptions. Authorities confirmed that students have safely returned to their campuses, with strengthened security measures now in place to guarantee their protection and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of education.

In a statement released on Monday, the Federal Ministry of Education said the reopening followed a comprehensive security review carried out in collaboration with relevant security agencies. The ministry emphasized that student safety remains paramount and that no institution would have been reopened without assurances of adequate protection for learners, teachers, and non-teaching staff.

“All 47 Federal Unity Secondary Schools are now open, fully operational, and safe for academic activities,” the statement said. “Security has been significantly reinforced around the campuses, and students have returned without incident.”

According to the ministry, academic activities have resumed fully across the schools, with classroom teaching, continuous assessments, and scheduled examinations currently underway. School administrators have reported smooth conduct of lessons and exams, dispelling fears that the academic calendar would suffer further disruption.

Officials said the successful resumption of examinations demonstrates the government’s resolve to maintain educational continuity, even amid broader national security challenges. They added that internal monitoring teams have been deployed to assess compliance with safety protocols and ensure that teaching and learning proceed as planned.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment, the ministry stressed that education remains a cornerstone of national development and social stability. “Education is a key pillar for national growth, unity, and progress,” the statement noted. “The academic calendar of our unity schools will not be disrupted.”

The Unity Colleges—established to promote national integration by bringing together students from different regions and backgrounds—have long been regarded as flagship institutions within Nigeria’s public education system. Any disruption to their operations often raises widespread concern among parents, guardians, and education stakeholders nationwide.

To address such concerns, the government disclosed that security arrangements around the colleges have been enhanced through a multi-layered approach. This includes improved perimeter surveillance, closer coordination with local security formations, and strengthened internal safety protocols. While specific operational details were not disclosed for security reasons, authorities assured parents that the measures meet current risk assessments.

Parents and guardians have been urged to maintain confidence in the safety of the institutions and to continue supporting school authorities. The ministry expressed appreciation to families and students for their patience and cooperation during the period of closure, acknowledging the anxiety and inconvenience experienced.

“We thank parents, guardians, and students for their understanding and trust,” the statement said. “Their cooperation has been vital to ensuring a smooth reopening process.”

Education stakeholders have welcomed the reopening, noting its importance for student morale and academic progression. Some school principals reportedly held brief orientation sessions upon students’ return, reassuring them and outlining safety guidelines on campus.

The Federal Government also reiterated its broader commitment to strengthening the education sector, stating that ongoing reforms aim to improve infrastructure, teacher capacity, and student welfare across federal institutions. Officials said ensuring a safe and stable learning environment remains central to these reforms.

As students settle back into school life, authorities say they will continue to monitor the situation closely and adjust security measures where necessary. The ministry stressed that any emerging concerns will be addressed promptly to avoid further interruptions.

With the reopening of all Unity Colleges, the government signaled its determination to safeguard education from prolonged disruption and to preserve the role of these institutions in fostering national cohesion.

For now, classes are in session, examinations are proceeding as scheduled, and the Federal Government insists that learning in Nigeria’s Unity Colleges will continue without interruption.
