THIS DAWN — The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly dismissed allegations that it is planning to unlawfully arrest or prosecute opposition figures.
The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, denied the allegation in a press release dated December 30, 2025.
Idris described the claims as fabricated disinformation designed to mislead the public.
He said the fabricators aim to destabilize the political environment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Fabricated Document
At the center of the controversy is a document circulating online that alleges the creation of a multi-agency task force under a purported programme tagged “ADP4VIP” (Arrest, Detain, Prosecute for Very Important Persons).
The document claims that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser, were mandated to target opposition figures.
The Federal Government categorically rejected the existence of such a programme, describing it as baseless and malicious.
According to the statement, the allegations are a deliberate attempt to frame lawful accountability measures as political persecution.
Government’s Clarification
The press release emphasized three key points:
- No ADP4VIP Programme Exists: The government stated unequivocally that there is no such initiative, and the claims are entirely fabricated.
- Focus on Core Agenda: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains focused on measurable economic reforms, defeating insecurity, expanding trade opportunities, and restoring investor confidence.
- Opposition Tactics: The government accused certain opposition elements of attempting to shield prominent figures from accountability by framing anti-corruption efforts as political targeting.
The statement stressed that Nigeria’s democratic institutions operate independently and that law enforcement agencies are mandated to act professionally and in the nation’s best interest.
The government underscored its commitment to constitutional freedoms, citing Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The constitution guarantees every Nigerian the right to freely associate and assemble.
President Tinubu, the statement noted, swore an oath to uphold these protections, including freedoms of association and religion.
By highlighting these constitutional guarantees, the government sought to reassure citizens that political rights remain intact and protected under the current administration.
Warning Against Disinformation
The press release also warned politicians and citizens against engaging in disinformation, misinformation, and fake news.
It noted that credibility in the digital age is intrinsically linked to informational fidelity, and spreading falsehoods undermines democratic stability.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, the government cautioned that fabricated narratives and political blackmail are likely to increase.
Nigerians were urged to remain vigilant and reject divisive tactics that exploit falsehoods for political relevance.
The government reiterated its unwavering commitment to the rule of law, due process, and institutional independence.
It emphasized that Nigeria is a constitutional democracy where law enforcement and judicial agencies must perform their duties without interference.
This assurance was intended to counter fears that anti-corruption agencies might be weaponized against political opponents.
Instead, the government maintained that accountability measures are lawful and necessary for national progress.
Looking Ahead
As 2025 draws to a close, the Federal Government stressed that it will not be distracted by perpetual politicking or fabricated allegations.
The Tinubu administration remains dedicated to delivering continuity, progress, and tangible results for Nigerians.
The statement concluded by reaffirming that every Nigerian retains the constitutional right to lawful association and political activity.
Meanwhile, security and anti-corruption institutions retain their lawful mandate to operate in the nation’s interest.
The Federal Government’s dismissal of the alleged “ADP4VIP” programme reflects its determination to counter disinformation and maintain public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The administration reaffirmed constitutional guarantees, emphasizing its focus on economic reforms and security.
It seeks to reassure citizens and investors alike that Nigeria remains committed to stability, progress, and the rule of law.
As the nation prepares for the challenges of 2026 and beyond, the government said its message is clear.
It noted that fabricated narratives will not derail its agenda, and Nigerians deserve governance anchored in truth, accountability, and tangible results.
