THIS DAWN — The Federal Government has announced the opening of applications into Federal Technical Colleges across Nigeria.

The move has been described as a major step in advancing free, skills-driven education for Nigerian youths.

The announcement was made by Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of State for Education, via the Ministry’s website and social media platforms.

Dr. Alausa emphasized that the initiative is in line with the Renewed Hope education agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR).

The agenda

The agenda prioritizes technical and vocational education as pathway to equipping young Nigerians with practical skills.

Such skills will enhance employability, entrepreneurship, and national development.

By expanding access to technical colleges, the government aims to:

  • Provide free education opportunities for youths.
  • Strengthen Nigeria’s human capital base in science, technology, and vocational fields.
  • Reduce unemployment by preparing students for skills-based careers.
  • Support innovation and industrial growth through a workforce trained in technical expertise.

Application Details

  • Opening Date: Monday, 26 January 2026.
  • Platform: Applications are to be submitted online via the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) portal.
  • Eligibility: Nigerian youths seeking admission into Federal Technical Colleges nationwide.
  • Focus Areas: Technical and vocational disciplines including engineering trades, ICT, applied sciences, and other specialized fields.

National Impact

The opening of applications represents a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future workforce.

Technical colleges have long been recognized as critical institutions for bridging the gap between formal education and industry needs.

By offering free, skills-driven education, the government seeks to empower youths with competencies that are directly applicable in the labor market.

This initiative also complements broader reforms in the education sector, including:

  • Expansion of vocational training centers.
  • Integration of digital learning tools.
  • Strengthening partnerships with industries to align curricula with market demands.

The launch of applications into Federal Technical Colleges underscores the government’s commitment to inclusive, practical, and future-oriented education.

As Nigeria faces challenges of unemployment and economic diversification, technical education is positioned as a cornerstone of the Renewed Hope agenda.

Dr. Alausa’s announcement signals a new chapter in Nigeria’s education policy.

It prioritizes skills, innovation, and opportunity for all youths.
