TDGhislaine Maxwell, currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for conspiring with Jeffrey Epstein to abuse minors, has made an extraordinary overture to President Donald Trump.
During a virtual deposition before the House Oversight Committee on Monday, Maxwell’s attorney declared that if Trump were to grant her clemency, she would clear his name of any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein.
The Overture
Maxwell’s lawyer, David Oscar Markus, stated that his client is prepared to “speak fully and honestly” if granted clemency.
He emphasized that only Maxwell could provide a complete account of events.
He added that “both President Trump and President Clinton are innocent of any wrongdoing.”
The statement, later posted on X, has ensured that the Epstein saga remains a political flashpoint.
Trump has not ruled out the possibility of offering Maxwell a pardon or commutation.
Both Trump and Clinton, whose names appear in the Department of Justice’s released files, have consistently denied any misconduct.
Congressional Reaction
House Oversight Chair James Comer described Maxwell’s decision to plead the Fifth as “very disappointing”.
Comer noted that lawmakers had many questions about her crimes and potential co-conspirators.
Democrats on the committee accused Maxwell of attempting to “buy her clemency” by refusing to testify.

Rep. Melanie Stansbury said, “We will not allow this silence to stand.”
Meanwhile, Epstein survivors urged lawmakers to treat Maxwell’s claims “with the utmost skepticism”.
They warned that her testimony could become “another opportunity for deception rather than truth.”
Broader Fallout
The deposition coincided with the release of millions of pages of Epstein-related files by the Department of Justice.
Lawmakers are now reviewing unredacted versions of these documents.
These have already sparked controversy over excessive redactions and raised questions about powerful figures’ ties to Epstein.
Internationally, the scandal continues to reverberate, with British royals expressing concern and other high-profile figures facing scrutiny over their connections to Epstein.
Maxwell’s overture places Trump in a politically sensitive position.
While her claims could potentially reshape public perception, survivors and lawmakers remain deeply skeptical of her motives.
Depositions of other figures will proceed and unredacted files will be reviewed in the coming weeks.
They are likely to intensify scrutiny of both Maxwell’s credibility and the broader Epstein network.
