THIS DAWN — The Economic and financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami SAN, for interrogation.

Malami himself confirmed the invitation in a post on social media but failed to state the reason for the invitation.

He wrote: “This is to confirm that I have been invited by the EFCC.

“As a law-abiding and patriotic citizen, I hereby reaffirm my commitment to honour the invitation.

“I understand the spirit of accountability and transparency in public service – the principles that I both advocate and champion.

“Rooted in public service and in the spirit of transparency and accountability, I am committed to sharing with the Nigerian public the developments as they unfold.”

What We Know — The EFCC Invite

  • On Friday, November 28, 2025, EFCC formally invited Malami for questioning.

  • The invitation was communicated in a letter dated November 24, signed on behalf of EFCC’s chairman.

  • The scheduled meeting is to be held at EFCC Headquarters, Jabi, Abuja.

  • In response, Malami publicly confirmed receipt of the invite via a social media post, pledging to honour it.

  • He described himself as a “law-abiding and patriotic citizen,” emphasising his belief in transparency, accountability, and public service integrity.

  • EFCC’s invitation letter cites provisions under Section 38(1) and (2) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2024, as justification for requesting Malami’s appearance for “clarification on some issues.”

What We Don’t Know — Reasons Remain Undisclosed

  • As of now, EFCC has not publicly stated the precise allegations or case for which Malami has been summoned.

  • Media reports reviewing his long tenure as AGF note that Malami’s period in office saw several major prosecutions, asset recovery efforts, and controversial decisions — including instances where his office reportedly intervened in corruption investigations.

  • Speculation in some quarters ties the invite to alleged irregularities in asset disclosures, contract approvals, or the management of recovered funds.

  • Given Malami’s prior supervisory role over EFCC during 2015–2023, many observers see this summons as especially significant.

Why This Matters

  1. High profile:

As a former AGF and Justice Minister, Malami wielded broad influence — including power to direct or take over prosecutions.

Summons now could trigger re-examination of past controversial decisions.

  2. Public demand for transparency:

With widespread concerns about corruption and impunity, many citizens expect full disclosure of the reasons and outcomes of the investigation.

  3. Precedent for accountability:

If properly handled and made public, this could reinforce the notion that even powerful former officials are subject to scrutiny.

  4. Political context:

Given Malami’s stated intention to contest a governorship election (2027), timing of the invite raises questions about political motivations — though no official link is confirmed.

What to Watch Out for

  • Will EFCC disclose the specific case or allegation?

So far, that detail remains opaque. A transparent disclosure would inform public perception.

  • Will Malami honour the invitation fully and cooperate?

He publicly committed to doing so. Outcome of this cooperation — whether clearance, plea, or further charges — will matter.

  • Will there be public updates or judicial proceedings?

The public and media will expect clarity on whether this results in charges, acquittal, or closure.

  • How this will affect public confidence in institutions?

Handling of this case could influence public trust in Nigeria’s anti-corruption architecture.
