THIS DAWN — Former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has dismissed widespread rumours alleging his death, assuring the public that he is alive and in excellent health.
The former governor issued a personal statement on Friday, thanking concerned Nigerians who reached out following the circulation of the false report.
The media sphere was awash with news that he died in a London hospital after a protracted battle with cancer.
A source, citing close family sources, said his ailment and death were sudden and that they were “devastated”.
Obiano debunks “rumour”
Obiano, who served as Anambra’s governor from 2014 to 2022, said he was surprised to wake up to claims about his wellbeing.
He emphasized that there was no truth whatsoever to the rumour.
He described the reports as the handiwork of mischief-makers who derive satisfaction from spreading falsehood.
“Let me assure you personally: I am alive, hale, hearty, and in excellent health.
“By the special grace of God, I am doing very well,” Obiano said in the statement.
He expressed concern over the increasing trend of individuals fabricating sensitive and potentially distressing information, especially on social media.
According to him, such acts not only cause unnecessary panic but also reflect a growing disregard for truth and decency in public communication.
“It is unfortunate that some individuals still find joy in spreading falsehood simply for reasons yet to be established.
“But we will continue to rise above such mischief,” he added.
Obiano extended heartfelt appreciation to friends, political associates, community leaders, and supporters who attempted to reach him through phone calls, text messages, and prayers.
He said their concern and goodwill reinforced his confidence in the bond he shares with the people of Anambra State.
“To everyone who reached out with calls, messages, and prayers, I sincerely appreciate your concern.
“Your love and goodwill mean more than words can express,” he stated.
In the meantime, Obiano celebrated his 70th birthday barely two months ago.
