In a dramatic escalation of Nigeria’s political tensions, former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has filed a ₦5 billion lawsuit against Nollywood actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo over alleged defamatory remarks.

The suit was filed through his legal representatives at Alex Ejesieme (SAN) & Co. (Madiba Chambers).

Obi demanded the immediate withdrawal of the statements, a public apology across multiple platforms, and compensation for reputational damage.

The Allegations

The controversy stems from comments made by Kenneth Okonkwo during a live broadcast on Channels Television’s “Sunrise Daily” on June 8, 2026.

In the broadcast, Okonkwo accused Obi and NDC leaders in the South‑East of demanding bribes from aspirants seeking nomination into the House of Representatives.

He alleged that party aspirants were told to pay ₦10 million in addition to the official expression of interest fees.

Okonkwo further claimed that Obi personally compiled candidate lists from his hotel room, warned aspirants of scams, and traveled abroad to collect money from individuals.

These statements, which were later amplified on social media and republished by outlets painted Obi as a corrupt political actor engaged in fraud and criminal conspiracy.

Obi’s Response

Obi’s legal team has categorically denied the allegations, describing them as “false, baseless, malicious, reckless, and defamatory.”

The demand letter stresses that the accusations were designed to tarnish Obi’s reputation and expose him to public ridicule.

They were also designed to undermine his standing as a statesman and political leader.

The letter emphasizes that freedom of expression does not extend to publishing falsehoods that impute criminality or dishonesty.

It insists that Okonkwo’s remarks crossed the line of permissible political commentary and amounted to a direct assault on Obi’s integrity.

Legal Demands

The suit outlines six specific demands to be met within seven days of receipt:

  1. Immediate withdrawal of the defamatory statements.
  2. Publication of a clear and unreserved public apology to Obi.
  3. Dissemination of the apology across all platforms where the allegations were made, including Channels TV, X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and other outlets.
  4. Equal or greater prominence for the apology compared to the original broadcast.
  5. Payment of ₦5 billion in damages for reputational harm.
  6. A written undertaking to desist from further defamatory publications.

Failure to comply, the letter warns, will result in Obi pursuing full legal redress, including claims for damages and injunctive reliefs.

Wider Reactions

The lawsuit has sparked intense debate within Nigeria’s political and media circles.

Supporters of Obi argue that the legal action is necessary to protect his reputation from malicious attacks, while critics suggest it may escalate tensions within the NDC and beyond.

Adding to the controversy, Obunike Ohaegbu, a political figure whose name was mentioned in connection with the allegations, publicly refuted Okonkwo’s claims.

Ohaegbu stated: “Kenneth Okonkwo lied. I never sent him any SOS, and I never said Peter Obi defrauded me.”

This statement further undermines the credibility of Okonkwo’s broadcast and strengthens Obi’s case.

Implications

This case highlights the growing role of defamation suits in Nigeria’s political landscape, where televised debates and viral social media clips can rapidly shape public perception.

For Obi, who has cultivated an image of integrity and transparency, the allegations strike at the core of his political identity.

Legal experts note that the ₦5 billion claim is one of the largest defamation suits in recent Nigerian history, signaling the seriousness with which Obi views the matter.

If successful, the case could set a precedent for how political figures respond to damaging broadcasts in the digital age.

Meanwhile, Okonkwo faces mounting pressure to either substantiate his claims with evidence or issue a public apology.

The next seven days will be critical in determining whether the matter is resolved amicably or proceeds to a protracted legal battle.

Outlook

The unfolding drama between Peter Obi and Kenneth Okonkwo underscores the volatile intersection of politics, media, and reputation in Nigeria.

As the deadline for compliance approaches, all eyes remain on whether Okonkwo will retract his statements.

Failure to do so, he would brace for a courtroom showdown that could reshape the boundaries of political discourse in the country.
