THIS DAWN — The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has formally rejected moves within the Rivers State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.
In a press statement issued on January 8, 2026, the party described the development as “untenable”.
It warned against destabilizing the state government through partisan strife.
Darlington Nwauju, spokesperson of the Rivers APC, signed the statement.
The statement emphasized that while the legislature is constitutionally empowered to exercise checks and balances, the party does not support the current impeachment process.
“Our position as at today on this matter is that we solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy,” the statement read.
The party argued that the impeachment threat is a spillover from internal conflicts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
It said the conflict should not be allowed to resurface within the APC.
Budget Dispute at the Center
The APC noted that the impeachment threat reportedly stems from disagreements over the state budget.
The statement reminded Rivers residents that under emergency rule in 2025, a budget of ₦1.485 trillion was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President and approved by both chambers.
The party stressed that the budget, designed to run until August 2026, provides sufficient fiscal cover for the state.
It added that Governor Fubara is constitutionally permitted to operate within a six-month spending window into the new fiscal year without presenting a supplementary budget.
This, the APC argued, makes the impeachment threat unnecessary and politically motivated.
The Rivers APC urged members of the House of Assembly, particularly its own legislators, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilizing the state government.
“Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure that the Government of Rivers State, which is an APC government, is not destabilized through fratricidal disagreements,” the statement declared.
The party warned that pursuing impeachment could drag the APC’s image “to the mud” and stifle the progress and development of Rivers State.
Emphasis on Democracy
In closing, the statement appealed for calm and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to democratic governance.
It cautioned against turning Rivers State into what it termed a “politicocracy”.
It urged lawmakers to discontinue the impeachment process and allow the government to focus on delivering development.
The Rivers APC’s rejection of the impeachment process highlights deepening tensions within the state’s political landscape.
While the legislature maintains its constitutional authority, the party leadership has drawn a clear line against moves it perceives as destabilizing.
As the situation unfolds, attention will remain on the House of Assembly and whether lawmakers heed the call to halt proceedings against Governor Fubara.
