THIS DAWN — Nigerian‑British boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital following the tragic road accident that occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The accident claimed the lives of two of his close associates, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, leaving Joshua deeply shaken.

The governments of Lagos and Ogun states have issued a joint statement commiserating with the bereaved families and expressing gratitude to all who showed concern during the difficult period.

Joshua’s Discharge and Emotional Burden

In their statement, the Lagos and Ogun State governments extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

They prayed for the repose of the souls of Ayodele and Gami and asked for divine strength for their families to bear the painful loss.

The governments described the incident as “tragic and unfortunate,” underscoring the emotional toll it has taken on Joshua, his family, and the wider sporting community.

Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, late in the afternoon of December 31, 2025.

Medical personnel deemed him clinically fit to recuperate at home.

However, reports indicate that he remains heavy‑hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends.

His discharge marks the beginning of a recovery process that will be as much emotional as physical.

Paying Final Respects

Shortly after leaving hospital, Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their final respects to Ayodele and Gami.

The two men were being prepared for repatriation later that evening.

The visit was described as solemn and deeply emotional, reflecting Joshua’s close bond with his departed associates.

The repatriation underscores the international dimension of the tragedy, as the deceased will be laid to rest in their home countries.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu expressed gratitude for the public concern and outpouring of affection shown in the aftermath of the accident.

They acknowledged the solidarity of Nigerians and the global sporting community, noting that such support has provided comfort to Joshua and the bereaved families.

The governors also extended appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his fatherly support throughout the process.

Tinubu had earlier spoken with Joshua and his mother, offering condolences and prayers, and assured them of the government’s commitment to ensuring the best possible care.

Commendation for Medical Personnel

The statement highlighted the role of doctors and medical staff at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, who attended to Joshua and other injured persons.

The governments commended the quality of care and professionalism displayed by the medical team.

It noted that their swift intervention was critical in stabilizing Joshua and managing the aftermath of the accident.

The incident has resonated widely across Nigeria and internationally, given Joshua’s stature as a global sports icon.

His survival and discharge from hospital have been met with relief, but the loss of his associates has cast a shadow over the celebrations.

The tragedy underscores the fragility of life and the importance of road safety, particularly on Nigeria’s busy highways.

Broader Significance

For Lagos and Ogun states, the accident has also highlighted the need for continued investment in emergency response systems and medical infrastructure.

The commendation of Lagoon Hospital reflects recognition of the importance of quality healthcare in managing crises.

Anthony Joshua’s discharge from hospital marks a turning point in the aftermath of the December 29 accident.

While he is physically fit to recuperate at home, the emotional scars of losing two close friends remain profound.

The joint statement from Lagos and Ogun governments reflects both compassion for the bereaved families and gratitude for the support shown by Nigerians, President Tinubu, and the medical community.

As Joshua begins his recovery, the tragedy serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to support victims, uphold road safety, and strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare systems.

The prayers and solidarity expressed by leaders and citizens alike underscore the nation’s resilience in the face of sorrow.
