TDThe African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the suspension of all planned congresses in its Anambra and Abia State chapters.
The party cited respect for judicial authority and the need to maintain internal party discipline.
Anambra State Suspension
Anambra State suspension was announced in a statement signed by Comrade Patrick Obianyo, Chairman of the ADC Anambra State Chapter.
The party declared the immediate suspension of all proposed congresses across the state until further notice.
Obianyo emphasized that the decision reflects ADC’s commitment to the rule of law and due process.
He urged party members and stakeholders to remain calm, law‑abiding, and peaceful during this period.
The statement further warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to recognize any activities carried out by unauthorized individuals “parading themselves” as party leaders.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the tenure of the current ADC Executive Committee in Anambra State, as well as in other states, remains constitutionally valid and duly recognized by INEC,” Obianyo said.
He advised the public to disregard directives or announcements from impostors.
He assured that new dates for congresses and conventions would be communicated after ongoing national consultations.
Abia State Clarification
Similarly, the ADC Abia State Chapter has distanced itself from congresses reportedly scheduled between April 7 and 14, 2026.
Hon. Don Norman Obinna, Chairman of the Abia State branch, clarified that the party is not organizing any ward, LGA, or state congresses during the period.
He referenced the Appeal Court’s decision to uphold the status quo ante bellum, which led INEC to remove the Senator David Mark‑led National Working Committee (NWC) from its website.
He instructed state officers not to oversee the purported congresses.
Obinna stressed that the current tenure of the Abia State ward, LGA, and state executives remains in effect.
He urged members and stakeholders to remain calm, positive, and committed to promoting ADC’s constructive message while avoiding actions that could disturb peace.
“Efforts are ongoing to revitalize the party and restore normalcy. Further updates will be shared as progress is made,” Obinna assured.
Broader Context
The suspension of congresses in both states comes amid heightened tensions within the ADC.
The tension followed INEC’s controversial removal of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its portal as recognized leaders of the party.
The move has sparked criticism and accusations of bias against the electoral commission, with party officials insisting that their leadership remains valid and recognized.
Observers note that the decisions by the Anambra and Abia chapters reflect a cautious approach to avoid further internal disputes and to align with ongoing national consultations.
Both chapters have reaffirmed their loyalty to the party’s constitution and their commitment to peace and unity.
As ADC navigates this turbulent period, the suspension of congresses in Anambra and Abia underscores the party’s determination to maintain order and legitimacy.
Meanwhile, party members await clarity from national leadership and judicial processes.
For now, members and supporters are urged to remain disciplined and patient, with assurances that the party will communicate new timelines for congresses and conventions in due course.
